MONDAY MAKEOVER - FAUX BAMBOO TABLE REVISIT

If you were to come to Charlottesville and pick up the FALL issue
of....
....you would be able to read an article about
me...and
well, My Old Country House.
I was contacted shortly after a photo of the now infamous
appeared in the June 2012 issue of
House Beautiful.
The lovely interviewer assumed,
....based on its popularity,
that the pink cabinet was my favorite makeover...
.... I then showed her
 the
"Faux Bamboo Side Table"

Last summer, after months of watching it languish
down the street
,,,,on the porch of the Greenwood Country Store...
For the cost of $15...
I rescued and adopted this dilapidated

It was in pretty bad shape. The back broken and was filled with dirt and bugs.
The top was warped.
The knobs, two of which were missing,
were broken and chipped...and not in a good way.
The drawer fronts were all falling off.
really...it was garbage.
BUT...there was one redeeming quality which gave me hope...

SURPRISE!!

IT OPENS!!!!

TADA!
FAUX SQUARED!
THE FAUX FAUX BAMBOO SIDE TABLE

It was NOT in fact, a side table, but a converted hamper!!...
...and I knew immediately
that I could transform it and put it to work it in our front hall...to replace the shoe basket...
and so I plunged right in to the makeover....HERE

anatomy of a makeover...
the first step in any furniture makeover for me..
if I do not already have a vision in mind...
is to pull out my magazines, new and old,  my collection of decorating books
and I comb the internet for inspiration.
I look for unique inspiration, possibly something that has not been tried much...

I also look for similar pieces, for hardware choices and
ways to make my cheap old piece
look NEW and expensive.
this piece below came the closest to looking like what I was working with...
and look at the price!!! Yikes!
and it's NOT even a  surprise hamper!!!!

Cottage Style Furniture Collection Faux Bamboo Nightstand
at Layla Grayce - $891.00 !!!
what!

Hardware can make of break a makeover.
Too often I have seen makeovers where the hardware is
beautiful but ALL wrong for the piece.
I loved the knobs on this side table and so right away went
onto my favorite discount Hardware website
MyKnobs.com
and found these
fantastic knobs:

Richelieu Hardware - Classic Expression - 1 7/8" Long Ring Pull with Rings Embossed Detail in Brushed Oil Rubbed Bronze

price - $3.68/each!!!

I PAINTED THE INSIDE
MY NEW FAVORITE SPRAY PAINT COLOR
at the time......LAGOON BLUE!

But right now I am loving kind of a Kelly Green accent, so I may change it....
those kind of changes are so easy and a great way to pull in a "HIP" color...

HIGH POINT MARKET 2012

minimal cost for an updated look.

I took off the back, and cleaned it all out.
I removed the LID,
...the underside was in better shape than the top,
 so I turned it over
I sanded it down, I then primed and painted it...
put it back on and replaced the hinges!!!
Beautiful!

Are you Ready for the REVEAL!!!!

  4. What you've done is gorgeous! Congrats on the mag feature. I flipped when I saw the top flipped open ... gives me ideas for building a basic box with flip lid + trim on outside as a hamper. You are so great with color so I'm curious about your current interest in kelly green ... I'd like to spray paint a mirror frame that color but nothing says kelly green to me in the stores ... is there a spray paint brand / color that **you** think about when you think about changing the color of the hamper / table? I'd so appreciate knowing that color if it exists :)
