I shared with you
....the most amazing
Twin BED set...
...THAT I got at a YARD SALE FOR
....a whopping $25...
OR ....$12.50 a BED!!!!
OR ....$12.50 a BED!!!!
The second I drove off with the beds in my car
I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to do...
PAINT
I chose from the new
BENJAMIN MOORE
Color Stories Line.....a soft gray called "PERSPECTIVE"
I ALWAYS BUY the paint for MY furniture makeovers in the pints size
which are an (at Benjamin Moore) an eggshell finish...
(note) They will make up pint samples of Color Stories colors
but ONLY in AURA...fine by me!
WIN WIN....Primer Built IN!
SAVINGS TIP
At MY Benjamin Moore Store....
there was a recent price increase on the 2oz. samples and
They are now $4.99
however... the 14.75oz pint samples (which can be mixed in any color)
are $5.92 with my discount (just ask)
.....no brainer....
SO
Beds ...CHECK
Paint ...CHECK
Mattresses???
the day after I got the beds, I opened up
CRAIGSLIST...
and...well, I will cut to the chase...
within one hour, I had emailed,
and driven to a house less than a mile from my home,
turned out to be a person I Knew!
she had just gotten the mattresses and was moving
I inspected them and purchased
2 TWIN mattresses
for $30
total cost
thusfar
$55
The bed was a breeze to refinish.
I washed it down, pulled out nasty old nails, sanded boo-boos and glued a couple rickety spots
and then painted the body with my new "Perspective".
The back had screws in it, that when removed,
released the upholstered headboard.
I then removed the old Taffeta fabric
....but opted to keep the original stuffing
as it was intact and I did not want to replace it immediately.
Basically too impatient!
I covered THAT with two layers of quilt batting
and THEN a LEFTOVER PIECE OF
A Premier Home Decor Fabric in a Slub Linen
.....which coordinates with other fabrics I have used in Phoebe's room.

these colors work, with lots of other colors, which is important to me. (obviously)

DeleteWhy would anyone PAINT over Antique Furniture.People spend Hours trying to get previously painted Antique Furniture back to the Original Wodgrain Finish because the Wood is Naturally Nice! Then put a nice Antique Oil or Varathane on it. It is no longer Authentically Antique once you paint it without doing alot of work of Course.
ReplyDeleteYou are SO right, and I wholeheartedly agree, too often we paint over beautiful wood, and strip a piece of it's value and inherent beauty. I love our beds painted, however, that is the style my daughter wanted for her teen bedroom. Wood was "too old"...sometimes, you can't win for losing, but I do appreciate your comment. It is food for thought.
DeleteThey turned out so gorgeous! I love the yellow with the navy and pink. Great job. :)
ReplyDeleteLizzie, Thank you so much!
DeleteAre you kidding me?! Those are beautiful, I'm stunned at how much you paid for all that. I need to start visiting yard sales more often. You did an amazing job, that whole room looks divine.
ReplyDeleteAlso, would you be cool if I used this on my B&A Friday feature? Let me know at betweenblueandyellow@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteLesli, I enjoyed seeing your makeover on Apartment Therapy today! I knew you would get mixed reactions, but that's the fun of that place. I LOVE the makeover and I know you and Phoebe do too. You're up to over a 100 comments over there!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bettsi...Yeah...there is a bit of a debate going on over there...but hey, They are talking about it and it is all good!
Deletegorgeous! you've honored these pieces by giving them a stunning new "life" with your daughter. i think you can only make yourself (or daughter!!) happy when you fall in love with antique/vintage wood furniture and not worry about others.
ReplyDeleteas a wood furniture refinisher, i struggle with painting each and every piece in a way that allows the piece to be enjoyed and appreciated by the user. isn't that worth something, too?? i wouldn't paint a "valuable" antique just to update a look and have passed on pieces that didn't need my style of refinishing. Still... how many of us have an UGLY "antique" haunting us in a dark corner of our house that we're afraid to update and ENJOY?
Thank you...we are very happy with the beds and they have transformed Phoebes room...
DeleteLove garage sales--they bring out the creativity in us!
ReplyDeleteyou are so right..in the words of Tim Gunn....they are a "make it work" moment!
DeleteI can't wait to show this to my daughter. I'd like to change her room up a little bit and she's afraid it's going to be boring. Your daughter's room is the perfect inspiration room! Beautiful job!
